Excuse me, its my turn to talk!
I always imagined the blogger as this hunchbacked golem. I imagined him sitting in the dark, ash tray full to capacity; sipping on energy drinks and trolling the net; waiting to spew discourse at a moment’s notice. In my head I dehumanised the blogger. That horrible creature, spreading its tentacles across the web, spawning constantly and disseminating untested information about God knows what with 2billion+ internet users ripe for the picking
So in my space I would go about throwing my two-cents-worth about bloggers, the power they possess potentially. I threw my opinion about what people wrote about, opinion pieces, politics and stories in mainstream media outlets. I talked about what I thought to whoever would listen....okay so I realised I have an opinion about most things. I also realised that I was no better than the monster-blogger I criticized so much. In fact what set us apart was the archaic medium I used to get my opinion heard, word of mouth. The medium that has stood the test of time. Granted, as Xhosa man and a man of two centuries I can appreciate the value of word of mouth in the same way that my grandmother insists on holding on to her fax machine and manual filing system.
But even I can’t deny the power of technology. Heck with 70% of my friends having only spoken to me online through one social media platform or another in the past year or so talking could become altogether unnecessary altogether. Yesterday I sent a text to someone who was 5 metres away from me. The monster has spawned and I am its offspring.
Besides, idea of thousands of people having access to my ideas, thoughts and suggestions excites me. The idea that I don’t have to hear that disagree until I want to excites me even more! The power to change lives threw creative penmanship, shifting governments and ending world hunger with the touch of a keystroke...exhilarating!
Okay so we're not there yet but we could be if we start having the right conversations about the right things. So join me in my little corner of the web where I share my opinion about whatever I deem relevant. If in the future i should offend anybody with what I say I’m sorry in advance. I would like to exercise my rights to free speech and have no intention violating anybody else’s rights doing that.
